OK, before I even post anything about poker, I think I need to learn the most basic thing first. I don't know how to play and haven't tried before...ever. So...help?

Well Kmten:

Not sure how old you are so if you are under the age of majority, ignore this post! lol

Playing poker can be alot of fun and very rewarding. I know when I was playing on the odd weekend with friends it was a riot. Some cold beer and some serious competition. Poker like anything else is a game that you continue to learn over the long term.

The 1st thing you need to learn is the rules of the particular poker game you wish to play. Understanding basic poker rules is fairly simple, it becomes more complex as you apply strategy to the game. Understanding certain strategies will improve your game over time.

For example understanding your table position is key in poker. There are hands you will play if you are in the late position that you wouldn't play at any other spot.

Knowing the probabilities of the cards is another learned and practiced strategy.

Learning to read your opponents is another factor involved in winning more games than losing at poker. Most people have a certain way they play. For example there are loose players and tight players. The looser players are more unpredictable where as the tight players are more predictable. There are players that will only play certain combinations of cards while others will go on anything. There are people who bluff well and bluff poorly. Sitting back and watching your opponents play a few rounds will give you some insight.

I suggest you learn the basic skills first and then try playing for free in some of the online poker rooms. Hone your skills there as it won't cost you anything, once you feel you are good enough to try a real money game play in the small limit sit & go tournaments first. Once you begin to play for real money you will find it quite different. Players will definately have some skill, albeit not necessarily good skill! Watch some tournaments first from the sidelines before you play because this will help you to determine the kinds of player you are going to find at the low limit tables.

Remember the most important thing in poker is to be PATIENT.
If the cards don't come sit patiently and wait for the right starting hand. Don't throw down your chips because you are bored! If you feel that tonight isn't your night for cards, walk away and live to play another day!

I hope some of this helped and if you have any specific questions don't be afraid to ask.

Experience is the most important way to acquire poker skill. The more you play, the better you will become, as you are exposed to different situations. Honestly, It's that simple.

Right, most people think that good poker can be learned out of a book, but the truth is that experience is the only way to get good at poker. Once you experience many different situations, you begin to pick up on things easier, and the game makes much more sense.

If you really want to learn to play poker well, the best way is to be taught by a family member and play against them for a while. Play for a few hours with your family until you get the swing of things (without money...use chips or something). THEN you can move on to using money. Then, once you get good, head to the casino at a LOW STAKES table.
